The Upper Venosta Valley is not just a paradise for nature lovers, but also a place of lived history and vibrant tradition. Nestled in the imposing mountain scenery of the Ötztal Alps, the Ortler massif and the Sesvenna Group, this region tells of centuries full of life, customs and artistic heritage.
Follow the historic Via Claudia Augusta and discover Romanesque churches, splendid monasteries and mighty castles – including the Marienberg Abbey above Burgeis, Europe’s highest Benedictine monastery, or the impressive Churburg in Schluderns with one of Europe's largest armouries.
A true highlight: Glurns, the smallest town in Italy. Its completely preserved city walls and picturesque arcades make it a historic gem in the middle of the Venosta.
Never forget also the sight of the Tower of Graun in Lake Resia: the church tower of the submerged village of Alt‑Graun (flooded in 1950) still rises from the water today – a silent memorial and a popular photo subject.
